Harry buys a wand that is connected to the dark wizard Lord Voldemort's own wand. Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley for school supplies and gives him a pet owl he names Hedwig. Rowling insisted that the entire cast be British and Irish, with the three leads chosen in August 2000 following open casting calls.
